From posh 5-star hotels to beach huts with no running water – and everything in between – no matter where you go, there is certain to be an accommodation option that suits your travel style and, often more importantly, your travel budget.

Sometimes, however, knowing what the best accommodation options are in the place you’re going can be tricky. You may not know the difference between a hostel and a hostal. A guesthouse might mean two different things in two different countries. People are surprised to find out that depending on where you are, a B&B doesn’t always come with breakfast. And even beyond these quirks, budget travelers often make the mistake of assuming that a hostel is always going to be the cheapest option – when sometimes it just isn’t.
