Many travelers have nothing more to think about when contemplating getting from the train station in Florence to their hotel than which route is quickest. Sure, the folks who brought a wheelie bag might be regretting that after a few blocks of rolling it over the cobbled streets, but other than an arm that feels like it’s buzzing for an hour or so, they won’t give it another thought. Now picture making that same journey in a wheelchair and the trip takes on a whole new dimension.

Traveling with disabilities doesn’t mean you need to travel less, it just means you need to travel smarter. Much of the world doesn’t yet cater to the needs of travelers with disabilities, so it’s important to do your research in advance. And although the burden is basically on you, the traveler, to be well-prepared when you’ve got a disability, the good news is that with the internet it’s easier than ever to be as prepared as you can be before you get on that plane.
